< Back CABARET: Matters of the Heart - Deborah O'Toole and Anywhere Festivals 26 July 2024 Season: July 26th, 2024 Title: Matters of the Heart Presented By: Deborah O’Toole Genre: Cabaret, Music Synopsis: A show about LOVE - with a cliche-free guarantee! From body image and babies to relationship baggage, "Matters of the Heart" takes a deep dive into this multi-faceted topic. Keeping it cliche-free as promised, the music covers Billy Joel to Burt Bacharach, from Joni Mitchell to U2, with some music theatre tunes thrown in. The songs speak about the complicated, confusing, and confronting aspects of love seldom expressed on stage. Conversely, Deborah lightens the mood with her tongue-in-cheek address of materialism, passions, and pursuits with her “Fame and Fortune” medley and Alma Cogan’s “I Love To Sing.” While exploring the various themes of love through song, Deborah’s unique cabaret offers an element of surprise through the incorporation of live digital art, inviting interaction from the audience who help devise the final artwork. Expect a completely unique interactive multi-art experience, woven throughout a highly polished vocal act. Take an emotional journey from heart-breaking to hilarious and leave feeling uplifted and joyous! Featuring powerful, yet emotionally touching vocals masterfully accompanied by a three-piece band, Deborah’s "Matters of the Heart" is raw and vulnerable, yet humorous and surprising. What happens when you give a group of playwrights just 12 hours to write a new short play, and then teams of directors and performers another 12 hours to rehearse? Beenleigh Theatre Group is about to find out at this weekend's 24 Hour Play Challenge! Writers will have a top-secret stimulus revealed to them on the Friday evening. Come 7 AM Saturday morning, it will be pens down as the directors take charge and work with their small casts to bring the brand-new works to life. Organisers: The idea has been brought to life by BTG Committee Members and theatre-makers Nicholas Hargreaves and Daniel Dosek, who noticed plenty of time-based challenges for creating new musicals and films, but nothing dedicated to plays. "The only problem with organising the challenge is that we can’t participate," says Nicholas (writer of Mayhem in June, a brand-new musical that Beenleigh Theatre Group staged earlier this year). "Daniel and I would love to jump in and try it ourselves if we could!" Adjudicator: Beenleigh Theatre Group is thrilled that Jocelyn Moore-Carter has come on board to adjudicate the challenge. Jocelyn has been involved in the Gold Coast Theatre scene for over 35 years as an educator, actor, director, advocate, and volunteer. Jocelyn's day job is a drama teacher, and she has been involved with the Gold Coast Secondary Schools' Drama Festival in numerous capacities, having held the position of president for 18 years. She is also a life member of Javeenbah Theatre, where she currently holds the position of Vice President but also frequently acts in and directs productions, making her the perfect candidate to adjudicate this type of challenge. "I love all things performance and am looking forward to the exciting and creative work being produced in Beenleigh," says Jocelyn. Previous Next
