9 to 5 The Musical by Coolum Theatre Players

Synopsis: Based on the 1980 hit movie, 9 to 5 The Musical features music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and a book by Patricia Resnick. Set in the late 1970s, it’s a hilarious story of friendship and revenge. Three female coworkers, pushed to their limits by their sexist and egotistical boss, concoct a plan to turn the tables. As they live out their wildest fantasy of giving their boss the boot, they transform their workplace and take control of the company.


Audition Dates:

  • Monday, July 15 at 7:30pm

  • Wednesday, July 17 at 7:30pm

Callback Date:

  • Monday, July 22 at 7:30pm (if required)


Rehearsals:

  • Every Monday and Wednesday at 6:30pm starting August 5

  • Two Sunday rehearsals on November 3 and 17

  • Tech weekend on November 22 and 23, with a dress rehearsal/preview on November 23


Performance Dates:

  • Evenings: November 29, 30, December 6, 7 at 7:30pm

  • Matinees: December 1, 8 at 2:00pm

Venue: Coolum Civic Centre


Cast of Characters:

  • Violet: The company's Head Secretary and Mr. Hart’s Administrative Assistant. Single mother, strong, ambitious. (Female 40 to 50)

  • Doralee: A young, sexy spitfire who works at Mr. Hart’s office, proving there's more to her than just looks. (Female 20 to 30)

  • Judy: The “new” girl at the firm, seeking empowerment after her husband's affair. Insecure, determined, hopeful. (Female 30 to 35)

  • Franklin Hart: A firm executive and notorious chauvinist. Arrogant and self-absorbed. (Male 45 to 50)

  • Roz Keith: The office gossip queen and snitch with unrequited love for Mr. Hart. (Female)

  • Joe: A handsome, young office accountant smitten with Violet. (Male 25 to 35)

  • Dwayne: Doralee’s attractive and supportive husband. (Male 25 to 30)

  • Josh: Violet’s awkward teenage son. (Male 15 to 18)

  • Ensemble: Office employees, police officers, hospital employees.


Audition Requirements:

  1. Learn and perform part of the song "9 to 5" from the show with choreography.

  2. For lead roles, prepare a song from a musical with a backing track. Bring your backing track on a USB or use Bluetooth speakers (no YouTube or Spotify).

  3. Perform 2 or 3 of the audition excerpts (not from memory).


Additional Information:

  • Successful auditionees must become a member of the Coolum Theatre Players for insurance purposes.

  • Provide your own shoes, some costuming, and makeup.

  • Note: There will be references to death, murder, S&M, drugs, alcohol, and 1980s sexism.
